Current Research:  

Research in my laboratory focuses on determining the neural mechanisms of pain and somatic sensation using behavioral, neurophysiological and brain imaging techniques in animals.  We recently developed an model for examining changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during pain perception in animals.  Current studies have applied this imaging technique to identify key spatial and temporal relationships among forebrain structures which comprise a neural network for neuropathic pain in rats with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). This brain imaging approach complements other studies from our laboratory using positron emission tomography (PET) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in humans.
