Current Research
We have been investigating signal transduction in insulin action, focusing on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the specificity of this important hormone. One important clue may lie in the compartmentalization of signaling events, both regarding signal initiation from the insulin receptor, as well as signal reception in different cellular domains. Studies include evaluation of plasma membrane microdomains called caveolae in insulin action, small G proteins mediating activation of glucose transport, molecular scaffolds critical to the regulation of protein phosphorylation and dephosphorylation, and regulation of vesicle trafficking in fat and muscle cells.
