Research Rotations (PIBS 600)
At least two research rotations are required in the first year of graduate study and up to 4 can be arranged. Research rotations are normally scheduled for a term, but the timing can be flexible as arranged with the laboratory mentor.

Current Topics Physiology (Phys 606)
Second year physiology graduate students take this course in the fall and winter term (1 credit/term). First year PIBS students interested in a Physiology degree are invited to register or audit the course.

Cellular Physiology (Phys 576, 577, 578)
This course consists of three modules each worth one credit: Signal Transduction (Phys 576); Channels & Transporters (Phys 577); and Nerve, Muscle, Synapse (Phys 578).

Electives
Electives can be selected from a diverse selection of courses offered in Physiology and other departments.

Common Choices are listed below:
Special Topics in Signal Transduction (Phys 590) Fall 2cr
Physiology Directed Readings (Phys 699) Fall & Winter 1-4 cr
Cell Biology (CDB 530) Fall 3cr
Morphology for Molecular Biologists (CDB 533) Winter 2cr
Principles of Development (CDB 580) Winter (even yrs) 3cr
Organogenesis of Complex Tissues (CDB 680-682) Fall 1cr per module
Gene Expression Modules (Micro 651, Bchm 652, HG 653) Winter 1cr per module
Molecular Basis of Disease (Path 581) Winter 3cr
Survey in Bioinformatics (Bchm 526) Fall 3cr
Molecular and Cellular Immunology Modules (Micro 640-642) Winter 1cr per module

Preliminary Examination
Usually taken in the Spring of the second year. Consists of written and oral components, including a grant proposal in the student's area of research interest.
